Better Than Takeout Teriyaki

Skip the takeout and make this easy teriyaki chicken at home in just 25 minutes. The homemade teriyaki sauce is miles ahead of bottled versions – it’s the perfect balance of sweet, salty, and savory with a glossy, sticky finish that clings to every piece of juicy chicken.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • Salt and pepper
  • Steamed rice for serving
  • Steamed broccoli florets for serving
  • Sesame seeds and sliced scallions for garnish

Teriyaki Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup mirin
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water

Instructions

Step 1:

Season chicken with salt and pepper. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook chicken 5-6 minutes per side until golden and cooked through. Remove.

Step 2:

In the same pan, add soy sauce, mirin, honey, brown sugar, garlic, and ginger. Bring to a simmer. Add cornstarch slurry, stir until thickened (about 2 minutes).

Step 3:

Return chicken to pan, toss in sauce. Serve over steamed rice with broccoli. Garnish with sesame seeds and scallions.
